At 44, Jay describes himself as an 'adventurer' and he talks a good line. 'I'm looking for a woman to love me and be loved by me. I would like somebody attractive. Not beautiful, but attractive.' Then he confides: 'There is one lady here, a surgeon. She has good English and is very intelligent but her teeth are not straight. I point out that teeth can be fixed. 'Yeah, you're right. I'll continue to converse with her. Who knows?' James is a high-school teacher from California who looks at least a decade younger than his 48 years. This is his fourth trip to Russia but his first on an organized mail order brides tour.

'I kind of screwed up the early part of my life in that I didn't get married, have kids and settle down. I need to recover those years. I can't do that with an American woman because they want someone within a five years age difference, plus or minus. I might look good to a 23-year-old American woman but as soon as she finds out I'm 48, I'm down the tubes. Whereas, last night I was out with a 22-year-old Russian woman. The limits are completely different here. You don't have the age restrictions.' He could have been married at least 40 times if he'd wanted to, he says, but so far he has yet to find a mail order bride who meets his criteria.
