MAIL Order Brides - the frustrating drop in employment status
sglover, It sounds as if you have a good grip on your future mail order brides situation. My experience is that your lady will have much more difficulty with her drop in status than any financial shortcomings you see in the future. We Americans see any frugality as a huge burden to bear, where it is a typical way of life for most mail order brides. Believe me, they know how to stretch a nickel when the need arises. The drop in status can be a very depressing issue though. Think about how frustrating it can be not to be able to land even the most entry level position job with a great education and job experience. Most mail order brides have to start over from square one when they arrive here. Anything you can do to prepare her for this problem will be helpful in her transition to living in America. KenC
High education but low income for mail order brides
My wife has a higher degree in economics (what we would call an MBA)... considering how poor I am with money, I have thought about letting her put ME on an allowance :-) But, right now, she is still learning how much everything is here. When dinner and a movie costs more than she made in a month... what is expensive? Also, until she can drive, the whole subject is pretty much moot, because she can't buy anything without me there. Actually, there is precious little that she wants to buy, and is usually trying to talk me out of buying things for her, not asking for things. Possessions-wise she is very content. One thing, though, she wants money so she can buy me presents for Christmas, anniversaries, and the like. This is a bit of a problem, because I don't want to give her money to buy me something... that doesn't feel right for either of us. But she was very upset that she had nothing to give me for Christmas. So, we still need to work that out. But as for an "allowance?" I think that is a little insulting, personally, and I wouldn't do it... My kids get an allowance. Mail order brides should share the finances -- good and bad.
