MAIL Order Brides and the Foreign Affair
At first the description you gave sounded like the movie was some sort of lame comedy. The worse scenario possible. Then from other posts I saw it was factual. Sounds like anti Russian women propaganda. And it makes us guys sound like rubes who who are lazy and out for a good time.
Maybe the director told the State Department he would make the process seem as awful as possible.
There are hundreds of illegal aliens who come to the US from bordering states and add nothing to our society.
Maybe a small minority of mail order brides use AM for a green card but most come here to start a new life with an AM they love.
And many make a conscious attempt to fit into the American way of life. And they try to make a positive difference.
How many Asians live in the US? I don't see many negative things about them in the cinema. How many Greeks and Italians live here? I'm afraid the US government and many people still hold on to the cold war notion not to trust any Russians, period.
Sounds like the romance was completely edited out of the movie making it seem to others that our quest for mail order brides is nothing more than sex and bringing women here to be our slaves.
Were there any positive things in this movie?
The only way I would see this flick is if it made me feel better about the process and had positive things to say. But it would not make money if it made this process sound positive.
:(

Clyde,
Perhaps you should actually go see the film before jumping to conclusions, in the same way that you might have objections to others' preconceived notions of WM/RW marriages.
FWIW, here's how Roger Ebert ended his review of "A Foreign Affair":
Do marriages like this work? Many Americans find mail order brides or arranged marriages bizarre, but think how bizarre it is to seek your spouse in a singles bar or on a blind date. There are countless possible partners out there somewhere, but we never meet most of them, and most of those we meet are impossible...
