Dnipropetrovsk (known as Ekaterynoslav before 1926) is a city in south-central Ukraine in 500 kilometres from Kyiv. It is the centre of the Dnipropetrovsk region and a port on the Dnepr river, has a population of 1189000. Dnipropetrovsk was founded in 1783 by Prince Grigory Potemkin and named Ekaterynoslav in honour of Catherine the Second. Dnipropetrovsk has developed into one of the largest industrial and cultural cities of Ukraine. The cultural establishments include several theatres and the Philharmonic Hall. The most outstanding architectural monuments are the Preobrazhensky Cathedral (18th century) and the Palace of Potemkin.
Dnepropetrovsk (Dnipropetrovsk in Ukrainian) - simply Dnepr, as it is called by local inhabitants is a dynamic and alive city. It is the largest center of Prydniprovye (historical region of Dnepropetrovsk, part of Zaporozhye and Kirovograd regions). The city is surprising green with the wide and slow Dnieper river (Dnepr in Russian, Dnipro in Ukrainian), remarkable embankments, long boulevards and spacious parks. It is also the center of high-technology industries and education, machine-building, metallurgy and trade. The city is not only famous for its commercial industry but also its green hills and deep history.
Dnepropetrovsk or "DNK" for short, is a city of 1.5 million persons lying on the banks of the Dnepro River in the eastern portion of Ukraine. Dnepropetrovsk is not considered to be as modern or "westernized" as most the other EC tour destinations, and quite frankly the economic situation is quite poor as most all Ukraine is after the collapse of the USSR. However Dnepropetrovsk is also a very rich city with character, culture, and soul, and has some of the most friendly and kind people you could ever meet.
